New Earthquake Strikes Turkey and Syria, Adding to Trauma and Loss
On Monday, a new earthquake hit the region of Turkey and Syria,
which was already hit by a massive quake on February 6. This latest quake
measured 6.4 in magnitude and caused six deaths and 294 injuries in Turkey,
while two people died and around 190 were injured in Syria. The quake was also
felt in neighboring countries, such as Jordan, Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon, and Egypt.
The survivors of the earlier earthquake have been struggling to recover, and
the latest earthquake has added to their trauma and loss. The US has pledged an
additional $100 million in aid to Turkey and Syria to help with recovery from
the earlier 7.8-magnitude earthquake, on top of the $85 million previously
committed.
Aftershocks-
Aftershocks are earthquakes that occur after the largest
earthquake in the area and before the region has returned to its usual level of
seismic activity. They can last for years and are expected after a significant
earthquake, such as the one that hit the region on February 6. While we can
predict the likelihood of aftershocks, we cannot predict precisely when they
will happen. As the people of Turkey and neighboring countries continue to
recover and rebuild, they will likely feel more aftershocks, which can be
traumatizing and devastating
